Baviaanskloof Devco, South Africa
Where Grounded’s journey started…
Regenerative production of essential oils
The Baviaanskloof is a remote and breathtaking landscape. A drive into the area is an immersion into wide and wild nature; many of the plants here occur nowhere else on the planet. It is also home to a very special community of people, whom we have been fortunate to work alongside in the common dream of landscape restoration, sharing many failures, set-backs and plenty of braais along the way.

To help formalize the transition, we established an independent company, Baviaanskloof Devco. It was initially co-managed by Grounded, but is now solely operated by the community in the Baviaanskloof, with the support from Commonland and Living Lands. Grounded remains a minority shareholder, and continues to support with marketing and sales to overseas markets. The company now not only promotes essential oils, but works together with the Baviaanskloof Hartland Conservancy to implement regenerative farming and rehabilitation across the entire valley, through a variety of activities.

Impact to date
This impact cannot be attributed to Grounded’s work alone, but rather is an achievement of the partners working together on the landscape. And of course these are just numbers; if you want to read more about this project and it’s challenges and achievements, we highly recommend reading our blog.

Essential oils
Rosemary essential oils have a gentle, herbaceous aroma and a calming effect when used in diffusions or applied to the skin and hair. They are a common ingredient in cosmetics, alternative therapies and ointments.
